EDT Lessons

Essential Driver Training

Build essential skills through a structured programme

EDT (Essential Driver Training) lessons are a structured program designed to teach new drivers the fundamental skills needed for safe and responsible driving. The program consists of 12 one-hour lessons, covering critical areas such as vehicle control, road safety, hazard perception, and defensive driving techniques. Each lesson is tailored to gradually build a learner’s confidence and competence on the road, preparing them for both everyday driving and the driving test.

12 one-hour sessions

The standard EDT course contains 12 sessions covering critical driving skills and safer decision-making.

Reduced EDT

For learners eligible for reduced EDT lessons, we offer a special program. Students must complete 6 of the 12 EDT lessons, and upon completion, they can apply for their driving test without the 6-month waiting period.

MyEDT records

Completed sessions are uploaded by the ADI and can be reviewed through the RSA MyEDT portal.

How to get the most from EDT

  • Prepare for the topic covered in each session.
  • Ask questions when a decision or technique is unclear.
  • Use instructor feedback to guide suitable supervised practice.
  • Check your MyEDT record and raise any possible error with your ADI.
  • Remember that completing EDT is a minimum programme, not a guarantee of test readiness.

EDT questions

What is Essential Driver Training?

Essential Driver Training is the RSA’s structured programme for learner car drivers. The standard programme consists of 12 one-hour sessions delivered by an Approved Driving Instructor.

How many EDT sessions are required?

The standard EDT programme has 12 one-hour sessions. Eligible foreign-licence holders may be approved for Reduced EDT, which has six one-hour sessions. Eligibility must be confirmed through the official process.

How can I check my EDT progress?

The RSA MyEDT portal shows completed sessions, upload dates and the sessions still outstanding. Raise any possible record error with your Approved Driving Instructor.

Can I change driving instructor during EDT?

Yes. Your completed sessions remain part of your record. A new Approved Driving Instructor can only sign off the sessions that they deliver, so bring the relevant details and discuss your progress at the outset.
